On the page to download the latest Cumulative Update for SQL Server 2017, you can now download Cumulative Update 8.
Oh I know. You’re reading the page, and it says Cumulative Update 7. They’re lying. When you click Download, you’ll get a file called KB4338363, which will apply build 14.0.3029.16 to your SQL Server.
I can’t tell you what’s in it because the KB article isn’t published yet, but looks like it’ll be here later: Cumulative Update 8, build 14.0.3029.16.
I’m publishing this now anyway because I’m hungry, and I am going to Cruz Blanca for tacos. My tacos will not wait. So here’s your half-baked Cumulative Update post, and I will go have a fully prepared taco.
Update 2018/06/20, after dinner – tacos were excellent. Microsoft’s Pedro Lopes checked in in the comments:
“You simply tapped into the release process while the pages are still out of synch with the new packages. That happens for a few hours worst case.”
So I’m sure it’ll be fine soon. I apologize for tapping into the release process. I didn’t realize I had such hacking powers. If you need me, I’ll be over here with Sandra Bullock, fighting off the Praetorians.
Update 2018/06/21 6AM – I awoke, hungry, but before heading out for breakfast, I checked in with the download page again. Microsoft’s getting closer: it now accurately says that it’s Cumulative Update 8, but the KB article with the contents is still a 404, so we don’t know what we’re gonna get.
I’m surprised the robots don’t handle this automatically during the build process. I keep hearing about how they’re going to take my job. They should probably focus a little more on doing their own job first. I can almost hear ’em: “We’re going to completely automate database administration – as soon as we can figure out how to publish this web page!”
Meanwhile, I’m still hungry. Little Goat Diner opens at 7AM. I think I’ll be having the Fat Elvis waffles. I tell ya, it’s hard to go wrong on Randolph St here in Chicago, tons of great places.
Update 2018/06/20 Noon: – Not all my meals are first class. In particular, this one is literally Economy Plus, as I’m flying cross country on airline miles with Erika. Lunch consists of beef jerky.
The CU8 description page is still not published.
Update 2018/06/20 After Lunch: We have liftoff! The Cumulative Update 8 page is alive.

SQL Server 2017 CU8 was not announced yet. Please refer to the official Release Blog at https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlreleaseservices/ for information about any and all SQL Server updates.
It wasn’t announced by Microsoft – but it was RELEASED. The patch is out, as is the Docker image.
Rant incoming: lemme rephrase what Microsoft just did. They put an exe out, labeled it as something incorrect (the download page really clearly said “Download Cumulative Update 7”), and somebody’s going to download it, not understanding that they’re getting a different exe. That’s bad.
You simply tapped into the release process while the pages are still out of synch with the new packages. That happens for a few hours worst case.
Maybe if you spent more time working and less time commenting on my blog, the KB would be posted by now instead of still being a 404 hours later. 😉
Four hours now. So I guess this is officially the worst case when it comes to Cumulative Update deployments. 😉
Pedro, still a 404 error a day later.
I’ve love to talk about the fixes in CU8, but it looks like that still isn’t possible yet. So, how was breakfast?
Joe – it was great. I’m now eating a snack of beef jerky as I fly from Chicago to San Diego, but I’m not sure if we can count that as a meal. I should update the post to include a picture though.
Glad to hear it. Looking forward to exploring the San Diego food scene?
Maybe we need a new SQL Server benchmark. What do you think of “Number of meals Brent can eat between publication of the CU and publication of the documentation”? Is this the baseline?
Yeah, we’ve been to SD maybe half a dozen times in the last couple of years. Our favorite spot is Island Prime – really good steaks, seafoods, salads, and views. We’re headed there for dinner tonight – hey, that might even end up in this post too!
The link finally works! But it shows all updates in the CU, no listing of what’s new in this CU vs. the previous one.
Only new fixes are listed. Do you see a fix in CU8 that is also listed in a previous CU?
It’s probably one of those release they can’t wait to forget. “Access Denied

I can’t open KBs in Chrome. Something about cookie length. Try in a different browser.
