I bet you’re coasting. You’re working as little as possible this time of year, just kinda clicking around, hoping nobody sees that half of your open browser tabs all start with Reddit.
Not Microsoft, my friend.
The blue badges have been churning out the releases:
- SQL Server 2014 SP3 CU1 (for a while there, I thought they might just stop at SP3, and the list of fixes in CU1 has started to drop down to a trickle)
- SQL Server 2017 CU13 – this one, on the other hand, is not a trickle but more of a firehose, especially a ton of access violation fixes and the one about your restores failing if you’re using TDE
- SQL Server Management Studio 18 Preview 6 – which I’ve been trying to use as my daily driver, but it is seriously frustrating that I can’t double-click on a SQL file and have it just open
Head on out and start downloading. And hey, this way you can look busy! Happy holidays.

I am seriously frustrated with the new SSMS model. I encountered a bug in 17.4, at that time the latest version out was 17.9. However, it also had a bug that prevented me from doing my job. Backed up to 17.8, yet another bug, backed down to 17.6, and while I still find bugs, at least they are not preventing me from doing my job. Biggest piece of horse-pucky that I have encountered in a long, long time.
